Substitute Training General Information

We are now accepting registration forms for our online Substitute Teacher Training classes!

Our classes are self-paced, online courses for candidates interested in becoming Substitute Teachers in WV and those who need to renew their permits! Our classes are approved by the WV Department of Education and provided online through Google Classroom.

Below you will find some information that may be helpful in making your decision to enroll in our classes. After reading through the information provided and watching our "Getting Started" video (also found at the bottom of the page,) if you would like to receive more information and a registration form, please email Melissa Acquino at mgacquino@wvesc.org

Cost / Time Frame / Class Overview:

The EPIC Substitute Teacher Training class costs $150.00 per participant. Non-refundable payment may be made via personal check or credit card. (Details will be provided with your registration form.)

Once you have signed up for our class and your registration and payment are processed, you will be provided with an invitation to join the class within 5 business days. (Usually faster) We will assign a specific login and password to you along with access to the class materials and assignments in Google Classroom.

Once you have access to the class, most participants can complete all requirements in about 2-3 days depending on how much time you have to devote to it, but you will be given up to 30 calendar days to complete and submit all assignments and assessments with a score of 80% or better on each. (Participants may resubmit assignments and retake assessments until a passing score is obtained as long as everything is successfully completed before your 30-day window is closed.)

You will progress through each lesson and at your own pace and submit one assignment per lesson using Google Classroom. You will need to have access to the internet and Google Classroom to be able to complete your work. Assignments will include virtual observations with reflection, short answer and written assignments, and multiple choice quizzes. You will NOT need to record yourself or provide any kind of video correspondence, so a camera is not needed. However, you will need to have speakers to hear video content for some of the lessons. No additional observations or assignments will be required after completion of the online course in order to obtain an EPIC “Certificate of Completion.”

Course Completion:

Candidates who complete all course requirements and submit all assignments and assessments with a passing score of 80% or better on each during the assigned class window will receive an EPIC “Certificate of Completion” showing they have met all requirements for the class. This “Certificate of Completion” is only one step in the process to become a Substitute Teacher in WV if you are a new candidate. We will review the process within the class, but you will use this “Certificate of Completion” as part of your application when applying for substitute teaching jobs. Renewal candidates will provide this “Certificate of Completion” to your county of employment, and they will help you apply for your renewal permit with the WV Department of Education.

The “Certificate of Completion” will be issued to the candidate within 5 business days of receiving the final passing assignment. We will also notify your home county and/or county/counties of interest that you have finished the class and will provide them with a copy of the “Certificate of Completion” if requested.

PLEASE NOTE: EPIC cannot guarantee that you will be hired by a WV county school system or WV education service cooperative upon completion of the class.

EPIC Online WV Substitute Teacher Training Class Eligibility:

Anyone may sign up to take our online WV Substitute Teacher Training class by completing/submitting the registration form and paying the $150.00 non-refundable registration fee.

You do not need to have an offer of employment by a county to complete our class. However, you should note the eligibility requirements for obtaining a WV Substitute Teaching Permit as shown below to ensure you can be considered for employment upon completion of the class.

In all 55 WV counties: To be eligible for hire as a substitute teacher and to obtain an initial WV Substitute Teaching Permit with the WV Department of Education that is renewable every 3 years, candidates must

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Complete an approved WV Substitute Teacher Training class
  • Be able to pass a Federal background check
  • Be of good character
  • Be physically, mentally and emotionally qualified
  • and hold at least a Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative 2.0 GPA as shown on an official transcript.

In some WV counties that have applied for/acquired a waiver due to a critical need for substitute teachers:

A Restricted WV Substitute Teaching Permit that is renewable annually may be available to candidates who meet all of the criteria as shown below.

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Complete an approved WV Substitute Teacher Training class
  • Be able to pass a Federal background check
  • Be of good character
  • Be physically, mentally and emotionally qualified
  • And hold an Associate’s degree with a cumulative 2.0 GPA

If you are not sure if your county/counties of interest have applied for/obtained this waiver, you should contact their Human Resources Department to ask so you will know if you are eligible for consideration for hire.

Our EPIC Head Start Pre-K program has obtained this waiver and will consider substitute teachers who are eligible for the Restricted Substitute Teaching Permit for hire in our Head Start Pre-K classrooms in Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan counties. Candidates who make application for substitute teaching positions in our Head Start program should note in their application that they have completed an approved WV Substitute Teacher Training class and are eligible for the Restricted Sub Permit. If hired, the EPIC HR Director will help you apply for your Restricted Substitute Teaching Permit through the WV Department of Education.

Berkeley County Schools, Hardy County Schools, Jefferson County Schools, Morgan County Schools, Nicholas County Schools, and Pendleton County Schools have also received this waiver, so you may also be considered for hire in these county school systems if you are eligible for a Restricted Substitute Teaching Permit, and they have a position posted. Check with your county of interest if they are not listed to see if they will also consider candidates for the Restricted Substitute Teaching Permit.

Google Classroom Platform:

If you are not familiar with Google Classroom, it is a free web service developed by Google that allows us to provide you with instruction and assessment virtually. While it is very user-friendly, and we will provide you with step-by-step instructions accessing and submitting your assignments; you should review our EPIC Getting Started video so that you understand the class format, how to obtain access, grading procedures, etc.
